Why We Chose the South Padre Island KOA
After nearly a decade since our last trip to South Padre Island, we decided it was time to return—and this time, stay somewhere that offered comfort, convenience, and those signature Gulf Coast views. A friend who lives in Brownsville recommended South Padre Island KOA Holiday Campground, and we’re glad they did.
We visited during the first week of October, which is considered off-season for the island. Crowds were light, traffic was easy, and the weather was still warm enough to enjoy time outdoors. For RVers who prefer a quieter stay while still having plenty to do, this is an ideal time to visit.
Getting There and First Impressions
The drive to the park was straightforward, although we noticed a lack of signage leading up to it. However, the large KOA sign at the entrance is easy to spot once you’re close. Check-in was quick and friendly, and we appreciated that the staff were happy to answer questions by phone and email before our arrival.
When reserving, keep in mind that you don’t select a specific site number—you choose a section, and your site is assigned when you arrive. There are pull-in, back-in, and pull-through options, some with bay views and others without. We stayed in Site 111, part of the Regal Row section, which was absolutely worth the upgrade.
The Sites: Regal Row Pull-Ins with Private Decks
Our Regal Row site was a pull-in spot with a large wooden deck on the right. The deck included outdoor furniture, a table with four chairs, two side chairs, and a small table—perfect for morning coffee or watching the sunset. These decks are what truly set this KOA apart.

The site surface was covered in large landscape rock, not fine gravel, but leveling our RV was stable and straightforward. Full hookups (30/50 amp, water, and sewer) were easy to access, and the water pressure was good.
While shade is limited, the park’s landscaping was well-maintained, and every site looked tidy. Most RVs sit fairly close together, but this is typical of most resorts. Overall, we found the South Padre Island KOA to be thoughtfully laid out and easy to navigate.
Amenities and Facilities
This KOA offers a solid range of amenities for all types of travelers:
- Heated pool surrounded by clean landscaping
- Two laundry facilities, both appeared clean. We did not use the facilities, but I did walk by and take a look inside.
- Fenced dog park for traveling pets
- Playground for kids, located across from our site
- Free Wi-Fi (login information provided at check-in)
- Trash pickup at your site throughout the day—just set your bag near the street
We found everything clean and well-maintained. The park had a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and stayed quiet during the evenings.
Fall Celebration Each Weekend in October at KOA South Padre Island
Our visit coincided with their fall celebration weekend, adding an unexpected bonus of community fun. Friday night kicked off with s’mores roasting, Saturday brought fall-flavored donuts and coffee in the morning, yard games in the afternoon, and a DJ with music on the recreation deck that evening. Sunday wrapped up with fall-flavored pancakes and toppings in the morning, followed by ceramic painting for all ages later that day.

The staff made these events enjoyable and family-friendly. Even though this was the off-season, the campground felt lively and warm without being crowded.
Nearby Attractions: Sea Turtles, Dolphins, and Local Food
One of the best parts about staying at South Padre Island KOA is its location; you’re close to everything the island has to offer.
We visited Sea Turtle, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles. It’s both educational and inspiring, and worth every minute of your visit.
Lunch at Viva was so good that we went two days in a row—fresh food, friendly staff, and great island flavor.
Our final night on the island ended with a sunset dolphin cruise through Breakaway Tours. The weather was perfect, the water calm, and we even caught glimpses of dolphins playing in the bay. It’s an experience every visitor should plan at least once.
Beach Day and Water Conditions
Of course, no trip to South Padre Island would be complete without a beach day. The beach was peaceful and covered in seashells, but the water was colder and rougher than we remembered from our previous summer visits. Instead of the clear turquoise water we’d seen in July years ago, it appeared more brownish this time—likely due to seasonal changes and off-season surf conditions, or at least that’s our guess. So many seashells….so many!

It was still relaxing to walk along the shore and enjoy the wide-open beach, free of summer crowds. The trade-off for visiting during the fall is less swimming but a more peaceful beach.
Park Cleanliness and Overall Experience
Cleanliness stood out at every turn. The pool and rec areas were spotless. The staff was friendly, always ready with a smile or local recommendation. They offered escorts to your site upon arrival, though we declined since the park map was clear and our site was easy to find.
The South Padre Island KOA maintains a professional yet relaxed vibe—ideal for couples, families, and even solo travelers who want a beachside retreat without sacrificing comfort. Trash pickup was reliable, and quiet hours were respected, giving us peaceful evenings under the coastal sky.
Pricing and Value
Pricing varies widely by site type—bayfront, deluxe deck, back-in, or standard pull-through—but we found the rates reasonable given the amenities and location. Considering the extras like events, cleanliness, and the Gulf Coast scenery, it’s easy to justify the cost.
Whether you’re looking for a quick weekend escape or an extended stay, the South Padre Island KOA delivers solid value for RVers who appreciate convenience and coastal charm.
Final Thoughts: A 5-Star Texas RV Destination
I confidently give the South Padre Island KOA a 5-star rating. It’s a destination that blends fun, comfort, and community in one scenic Gulf Coast setting.
You can relax by the pool, enjoy the evening events, explore local wildlife (birdwatching areas nearby), or take a sunset cruise—all within minutes of your RV site. And if you time your visit right, you can even watch a SpaceX launch from the deck of the rec building, which offers a perfect vantage point over the bay.
The KOA also rents kayaks, aqua bikes, and other water toys, so there’s truly something for everyone. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, a family, or just need a coastal getaway, the South Padre Island KOA is a top pick for your next Texas RV adventure.
