If you’ve been dreaming of a quiet, nature-filled camping getaway, Yegua Creek Park near Somerville, Texas, is one of those special places that reminds you why you love RV camping. With spacious campsites, sparkling lake views, and that unmistakable Texas serenity, this Corps of Engineers Park deserves a spot on your travel list — especially if you enjoy rustic beauty without resort crowds.
We visited the third weekend of October and were blown away by the park’s natural beauty. It was technically fall, but Saturday felt like mid-summer — hot, humid, and bright. Still, when the sun started to dip below the horizon, the views across Lake Somerville were absolutely breathtaking.
Natural Beauty on Lake Somerville
The first thing you notice at Yegua Creek Park is how untouched the landscape feels. Wild grass, towering trees, and open lakefront views surround the campsites. We stayed in site #19, a back-in gravel pad with one of the best panoramic views.
The sites are large and well-spaced, making it easy to relax without feeling crowded. Leveling blocks were needed for our site; the site was at an incline, but we managed to get the RV level. While our area didn’t have any shade, other areas offered plenty of trees for those who prefer cooler spots.
The waterfront scenery is the star here — calm, reflective, and postcard-perfect for both sunrise coffee and sunset relaxation.
Campsite Details & Amenities
Like most Corps of Engineers parks, Yegua Creek Park keeps things simple and budget-friendly. You’ll find 30/ 50-amp electric hookups and water at each site, but no sewer. Two dump stations are located within the park and are easy to access when you depart.
The water pressure was good, and both Verizon and AT&T cell signals worked well during our stay. According to our group, the restrooms and showers were clean, and the grounds were tidy and well-maintained (except for the fire ants and stickers).
There’s no camp store, and amenities are minimal — but that’s part of what makes this park special. It’s camping the way it used to be: quiet, simple, and close to nature.
Relaxation and Lakeside Fun
Near our site, a small sandy beach area invited kids to dig, splash, and play along the water’s edge. As the day wound down, adults pulled camp chairs into the shallow water to watch the sunset and soak their feet — easily one of the most peaceful ways to end a Texas evening.
Later, older kids fished from the shore while the rest of us enjoyed the night sounds — frogs, gentle waves, and the occasional laughter from another campsite.
Yegua Creek Park doesn’t offer big attractions or flashy features, but it delivers something better: the perfect backdrop for slowing down and reconnecting with nature.
Wildlife, Peace, and a Few Sticky Surprises
The park’s natural setting brings both charm and challenges. Expect to see plenty of birds and local wildlife around the lake. However, you’ll also meet a few less-welcome residents — namely, fire ants and stickers. They were thick enough to cling to flip-flops, so packing closed-toe shoes and insect spray is smart preparation. A note on the wildlife: if you leave your trash out, they will get into it and make a mess! Ask me how I know….
Even with that minor drawback, the setting itself is gorgeous. The wild grass, tree-filled campground, and lake views create an atmosphere that feels completely disconnected from city life.
Reservations, Hosts, and Planning Ahead
Booking at Yegua Creek Park is quick and simple through Recreation.gov. The reservation process was smooth, and our park host greeted us at our site upon arrival. He was friendly, helpful, and made check-in effortless — no need to return to the gatehouse the next morning.
By Saturday morning, every campsite was full, even in mid-October. That tells you how popular this spot is. Since it’s not a large campground, it’s smart to book at least a month ahead.
Who Should Visit
This is one of those parks that appeals to nearly every type of camper.

- Solo travelers will find serenity, safety, and a sense of calm that’s hard to find elsewhere.
If you crave peace, scenic beauty, and simplicity, Yegua Creek Park checks every box.
Final Thoughts
Would we go back? Absolutely — and we’d book the same site again. Despite the unseasonable heat and those persistent stickers, the lake views and tranquility made it one of our favorite Corps of Engineers experiences.
This park is ideal for those who enjoy no-frills camping with unbeatable scenery. It’s proof that you don’t need a resort pool or fancy amenities to have a five-star weekend. Bring your blocks, pack your chairs, and plan to unwind by the water’s edge.
