Comfortable Camping Usually Looks Simpler Than People Expect
When people first start RV camping, I think many imagine the perfect campsite setup involves elaborate outdoor kitchens, matching décor, decorative lights everywhere, giant rugs, themed pillows, and enough equipment to fill an entire cargo trailer. And honestly, some campsites really are beautiful.
But over the years, I have realized that what actually makes a campsite comfortable usually has very little to do with how impressive it looks. For us, a comfortable campsite feels peaceful, relaxed, and easy to live in for a few days. It feels like a place where you can slow down a little. That feeling matters far more to me now than whether the campsite looks Pinterest-perfect in photos. Because honestly, some of the most comfortable campsites we have ever had looked very simple once everything was set up.
Comfort Starts with a Campsite That Fits Your Style
One thing I have noticed over time is that comfort means something different for every camper. Some people love elaborate outdoor setups with decorations, rugs, outdoor televisions, and full camp kitchens. Other campers prefer extremely minimalist setups where almost everything stays packed inside the RV. Most of us probably land somewhere in the middle. For us, comfort usually means keeping the campsite functional and uncluttered enough that we can actually relax instead of constantly managing “stuff.” Our setup outside is fairly simple most of the time. We usually have two zero gravity chairs with a small folding table between them for drinks, snacks, phones, or whatever random camping item currently needs a temporary home. DooDoo also has a hammock chair that everybody fights over because, somehow, it instantly becomes the best seat at the campsite the second someone sits in it. Then we usually have the Blackstone set up with its stand, along with another folding table nearby that works as a prep station while cooking.
Sometimes we also set up a larger table with a tablecloth if family or friends are camping with us, but honestly, if it is just the two of us, that table often stays packed away now. Over time, our campsite setup has slowly become simpler. And honestly, camping feels easier because of it.
The Best Campsites Usually Feel Relaxing, Not Complicated
One thing I think experienced campers eventually learn is that complicated campsite setups often create more work than comfort. At some point, we realized we did not want to spend half the camping trip setting up and tearing down outdoor equipment. Now we loosely follow what has become our unofficial thirty-minute setup rule.
If something consistently pushes campsite setup beyond roughly thirty minutes, we seriously question whether we actually need it anymore. Usually, the answer becomes: probably not. That mindset changed our camping style quite a bit. A simpler setup means easier arrivals, easier departures, and, honestly, much slower mornings before leaving the campground. We spend less time packing and more time actually sitting outside enjoying the campsite before heading home. And those slower campground mornings are honestly some of my favorite camping moments now. Coffee outside. Rya stretched out nearby. A quiet campground slowly waking up around us. That feels far more valuable to me now than having the fanciest campsite in the loop.
Shade Changes Everything During Texas Camping
One thing that absolutely affects comfort while camping in Texas is shade, especially during summer. A shaded campsite can completely change the entire camping experience for both people and pets. Even the most beautiful campsite can become miserable if there is absolutely no relief from the afternoon sun. That is one reason we pay attention to campsite layouts much more now than we did years ago. Trees matter. Airflow matters. Where the afternoon sun hits the RV matters, and honestly, dogs notice it too. Rya is happiest outside when she has shady spots available near us while we relax at the campsite. Most of the time, she simply rotates between lying beside our chairs, stretching out under the RV, or quietly watching campground activity nearby. Comfort usually becomes much easier when nobody is fighting the heat constantly.
Easy Meals Somehow Feel More Relaxing While Camping
One thing I have learned about comfortable camping is that simple meals usually create a more relaxing trip for us. Some campers absolutely love elaborate campground cooking setups, and truly, I admire them because some of those meals look amazing. But for us, camping meals tend to stay pretty easy. Blackstone cooking works well because cleanup stays manageable and meals come together quickly without creating a huge mess inside the RV afterward. Sometimes dinner is burgers, or maybe it is fajitas. Sometimes breakfast food for dinner or it is sandwiches after a long beach day. The specific meal honestly matters less than the feeling surrounding it. Sitting outside together while the food cooks. Lanterns glowing softly around the campsite. Rya nearby hoping somebody accidentally drops something edible. That atmosphere creates comfort far more than complicated recipes ever could for us.
Lighting Changes the Feeling of a Campsite
One thing people probably underestimate when creating a comfortable campsite is lighting. Too much lighting can actually make a campsite feel less relaxing sometimes. Our lighting setup stays fairly minimal. We mostly use small solar or battery-operated lanterns scattered around the campsite instead of extremely bright lighting everywhere. The softer lighting creates a calmer atmosphere at night while still giving us enough visibility to comfortably move around the site.
Honestly, I think softer lighting makes campgrounds feel more peaceful overall. There is just something relaxing about sitting outside at night with quiet lantern light instead of feeling like you accidentally parked under stadium lighting. But sometimes we use the lighting on our RV awning for a brighter campsite. Just depends on what we are doing. Games require more lighting than sitting out enjoying the evening.
Comfortable Campsites Usually Feel Lived In
One thing I think social media sometimes gets wrong about camping is the idea that campsites should always look perfectly staged. And honestly, beautiful campsites can absolutely be fun and inspiring. But I also think some campers accidentally spend so much time trying to create the “perfect” campsite that they miss actually enjoying the camping trip itself. Meanwhile, some of the most comfortable campsites I have ever seen looked completely lived in and messy. Shoes near the steps. Beach towels drying. A dog leash hanging nearby. Coffee cups sitting on the table. People outside relaxing instead of arranging decorations. That kind of campsite usually feels welcoming to me. Real camping life naturally leaves signs that people are actually enjoying themselves. Messy campsites are not only normal, but they also reflect the fun that is happening at the campsite.
The Most Comfortable Campsites Usually Feel Peaceful
At the end of the day, what actually makes a campsite comfortable has much less to do with expensive gear and much more to do with how the campsite feels once everybody settles in. A comfortable campsite feels peaceful. It feels manageable. It feels relaxing enough that nobody is rushing constantly. For us, that usually means: simple setup, easy meals, comfortable chairs,
minimal clutter, soft lighting, shade, and enough time to actually enjoy being outside together.
Because frankly, the best camping memories rarely come from having the fanciest campsite in the campground. Most of the time, they come from finally slowing down enough to enjoy the campsite you already have.
